Patient Information

Dear Patients/Parents

We would like to inform you or your family member who has ADHD medication prescribed by our GP practice, that Kingsway Surgery will cease to prescribe medication for treatment of ADHD from 01/01/26.  We will ensure you have your medication up until 31/12/25.

What is changing?

We will be writing to the specialist team that diagnosed your ADHD and recommended medication.  We have advised them that from 01/01/2026 we expect them to take responsibility for prescribing your medication.  They will also provide the monitoring that you need (for example height, weight, blood pressure).

Is there anything I need to do?

No, we will write to your specialist team before this transition to ensure a smooth handover.

If you have any questions regarding this, please contact your specialist team.

Why is the process changing?

There are a lot more patients who take medication that needs monitoring and there is an aging population. GP practices are struggling to meet these increasing needs with the staffing capacity they have available. In addition, the national shortage of medications and the complexity of ADHD care pathways has made safe ongoing prescribing of ADHD medication challenging.

As a result, Kingsway Surgery, as well as others in Mid and South Essex feel that we can no longer safely continue to prescribe ADHD medications and provide the necessary monitoring, a service that has never been part of core contractual GP work.  For this reason, after 31/12/ 2025 Kingsway Surgery will no longer issue prescriptions for ADHD medications.

Non-NHS contracted Work

Dear patients, non–NHS contracted work such as private medicals for HGV drivers, taxi drivers, travel cancellation forms, insurance requests etc are not part of our contracted work for the NHS.

GPs do not have to complete non–NHS contracted work for their patients.

Our NHS work for our patients is our focus, therefore requests for any type of non–NHS contracted work can take a long time to get to completion. If you need to have your request for this type of work completed as soon as possible, please do not hand it in or send into the surgery but seek an alternative route.

When we receive any requests for this type of work either via post, email or handed in at reception please be aware that we will not contact you until we are able to offer an appointment for any medicals or completed any forms from patients or insurance companies. We will however require payment before completion of any work and a request will be made for this to the patient or company that is requesting the information.

Our GPs are contracted by the Department of Health to offer medical services to our NHS Patients, any non-contractual work is chargeable to the patient or company requesting the information.

Kind Regards

Kingsway Surgery
